Marketing professionals need to know the art of conversation. They know to mirror the tone of the people they are talking to and to tailor their language as well. The average American reads at the grade-school level, so that means that you must develop writing strategies that speak to the reader in simple, direct terms (see also: Don't Be a Content Snob: Listen to What Your Audience Wants). Writing the way people talk is necessary, even if copy is filled with fragmented sentences.
You can't write without words! In Lesson 7, you'll learn to make accurate word choices. Tip #9 – Cultivate discipline as a daily practice. If you rely solely on passion and motivation, you’re screwed. You need to have the thick skin of a professional and be able to get things done even when you don’t want to or don’t feel like it. Read the book: The War Of Art by Steven Pressfield. It’s a quick read, but it will give you a framework on how to think about getting your work done.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that writers in general earned a mean yearly salary of $73,090 as of May 2018. However, there was a wide variance in wages among writers. The bottom ten percent of professionals took in $31,700 or less each year, while the top ten percent of these workers made $121,670 or more annually. The BLS reported that technical writers in particular earned a mean wage of $75,500 as of 2018, with most of these professionals making between $43,110 and $114,930 each year.
Tip #10 – Once you’ve paid your dues and you can actually write something that makes your clients money, make sure you attend the most popular marketing seminars. Anything by Dan Kennedy is a winner. Traffic and Conversion summit is another one. And read a book or two on how to network. Going there without knowing how to network will be a waste of your time. Start with: Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi. That book changed my life.

A very elaborate course of 4.5 hours teaches you about not just how to write and publish using various social media channels,but also teaches you the business aspect of how to make your solo journey successful. Tip #8 – While sticking with that niche, be sure to hunt down proven offers in other niches. You’ll get ideas on how to present your clients’ offers that you would have never thought of otherwise. I mostly write for dating and personal growth these days, but I still watch VSL’s in the survival and fitness niches. Why? Because those are highly competitive niches, so the offers that are actually making a serious profit are going to have the best copywriting.

The reason is that each form of writing has its own style. News is delivered AP style, in short, informational paragraphs with the meat of the story at the top. Blogging is personable, friendly and often opinionated. Ad copy is short and persuasive. White papers are long; they describe a problem and provide the solution. But, regardless, each and every category is content, and each style writers master makes them more valuable and in demand.

Tip #11 – Your clients will almost always try to get more services out of you for their money. This is common, don’t take it personally. I used to get angry about this. Then a friend told me that instead of saying “no”, just say, “Sure I can do that, and here’s how much more it’ll cost.” Thousands of dollars were added onto my income because of that one distinction.
P.S. – One final tip. Don’t ever use your copywriting skills to sell substandard products that don’t actually help people. If you do, a time will come when all the disappointment you’ve added unto the world will come back to you in some form. Make sure that part of your initial consultation involves you evaluating the client’s product and making sure it’s up to snuff. If it’s not, offer to help them make it better for an additional fee. Learn how good direct response products are made. Your client will appreciate the help and the world will be made better because of your vigilance.
Same goes for people in a comfortable state of mind. Therefore, if your copy leaves readers with the impression that your offer will always be there, patiently waiting for them to pull the trigger, they may use that as a justification to not convert on your call-to-action. They’ll sleep on it, consider their options, and weigh the pros and cons. And after all that, they may very well do nothing at all because you gave them the chance to talk themselves out of it.

I write a lot of product review articles and I can attest to what a valuable resource Amazon reviews are. I have also found the “Questions Asked by Customers’ section to be a gold mine. The questions are asked by people who are considering buying the product and are answered by the sellers and, importantly, by people who have actually bought and used the product. I get ideas for most of my subheads from there.
It can help, but other degrees also have content writing value. For instance, the ability to synthesize and relate complex information is key to content writing, but can also be acquired from studies in education or philosophy. Companies that offer content writing positions tend to find it easier to train someone in a complex topic than to train someone to write, however. For example, as a healthcare professional with mediocre writing skills, you're less likely to be hired as a healthcare content writer than a strong writer with no healthcare background (but who can be trained in healthcare topics).

Often, your project will come with an expected words per hour, or article per hour, as well as strict deadlines. You will not have time to labor over every word or turn of phrase. Tip #7 – Choose one industry and master it. For 16 years now I’ve done a lot of work in the dating advice industry. There are very few copywriters in the world who know more about what the customer’s desire and pain points than I do. If you’re passionate about fitness, then stick with that niche and devour that industry’s best offers. Become a stalker of good copy in your favorite niche.
Check your local college or university for a technical writing certificate program. Look at the faculty of the program to confirm you are being taught by professionals in the field or working content writers who are familiar with the demands of the writing industry. Certificate programs can be beneficial for writers who are new to content writing or technical writing.[6]

Use a newspaper article from a local publication or an online publication and break it down based on the upside triangle structure of a typical newspaper article. Does the article conform to the traditional structure or does it use a different structure or form? Does the writer seem credible and believable? Does the article use reputable sources and quotes to support any arguments in the article?
